Network Security



Module Description:

This module will provide an overview of the foundations and applications of security principles to networked systems. We will begin with the basic requirements of network security and threat models. Other topics include: cryptography; confidentiality, authentication and authorization protocols; exploits and attacks such as worms, viruses and denial of service; firewalls; security policies and web security in general. If time permits, security in wireless network will also be covered.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, students will acquire sufficient knowledge & experience via lectures and practicals to:

  • Understand the basic definitions and principles in computer and network security.
  • Understand how the use of cryptography in security policies.
  • Understand how exploits and attacks work and how to defend against them.
  • Understand further issues in wireless network security.
