Networks

Module Description:

This module is designed to initiate the students to the fundamentals of computer networking. This module exposes the concepts and applications of communications technologies and networks in the context of the OSI reference model. The various communications protocols, standards and architectures in computer networks will also be covered as well as basic network design and security.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Understand the technical literature, concepts and issues involved in computer networks.
  • Understand how to effect reliable data transmission.
  • Understand the layered model and distinguish the different protocols & type of services provided at each layer.
  • Understand the techniques and algorithms that have been devised to effect proper communication across networks.
  • Contrast between traditional & emerging data-link standards.
  • Understand the types & functions of network devices.
